Behind the drivers from the three top teams – Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes – the title of ‘best of the others’ was won by Lando Norris. The young English talent from McLaren performed a small sporting miracle, managing to end the season in seventh place in the drivers’ standings despite the Woking-based team only finishing fifth among the Constructors. An emblematic result of the qualities of the #4 and above all that testifies to the very high level of driving shown throughout the year by the 23-year-old from Bristol. Norris in 2022 was also the only driver not belonging to the three strongest teams a get on the podium.
The company succeeded Imola, crossing the finish line in third position behind the two Red Bulls. A result, the one collected in Italy, which however was facilitated by the mistake of Charles Leclerc, who spun his Ferrari while he was in third place and was trying to chase Sergio Perez. Analyzing his season, however, Norris let it be understood that he was not completely satisfied with the results achieved, hoping for a significant step forward from his team for the years to come. In fact, the Englishman recently renewed his contract with the papaya stable until the end of the 2025 season.
“Achieving a podium always means something – explained Norris, as reported by the site Racefans – it means something to me and it means something to the team. But one podium is not enough“. What annoyed the Englishman was the feeling that the result at Imola in fact depended above all on good luck: “A single podium is like saying ‘We have been lucky’. Instead you want to feel like you deserve to be there. We deserve it for sure, [ma] we weren’t fast enough. We were way ahead of where we should have been. A podium is not enough for me. The whole team didn’t do a good job – concluded bitterly Norris – And all this is due to the car we had. Everyone is working hard now, everyone knows that, that’s nothing new.”.
