A new norpa was found in the ice fjord of Ilulissat.
International a group of researchers has photographed a new type of ringed seal, or norpa, in Greenland, says the University of Helsinki, whose researchers were involved in the project. A new norpa was found in the ice fjord of Ilulissat.
Jäävuono seals are clearly larger than other arctic nordic seals, and their fur has a different coloring and pattern. Local hunters have been aware of the differences and have called the Norse of the ice fjord Kangalians after the name of the region.
Telemetry and mapping data show that there are only a few thousand Kangian Norpi. They stay in their own ice fjord, even though the population density there is high. This is significantly different from other Arctic norse, which occur in large populations and seasonally move thousands of kilometers in search of food.
Kangian norps have been separated from other norps for more than a hundred thousand years.
