The Government of the City of Buenos Aires published a regulation that prohibits teachers from using various forms of so-called inclusive language in city schools.
Its mayor, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, indicated this Friday that it is a measure that aims to “simplify” the way in which students learn.

“We are adding one more measure with the idea of simplifying the way in which children learn and incorporate language. The idea is to order the use of the at sign, the x and the e for the moment of teaching, establishing a guide of recommended practices to communicate inclusively”, affirmed the mayor of the Argentine capital at a press conference.
The official added that “teachers have to respect the rules of the Spanish language because the kids have to master the language as it is.”
The decision, which generated a barrage of criticism, was transmitted to all schools in the capital, both state and private, by resolution of the city’s Minister of Education, Soledad Acuña.

The ministerial resolution established that teachers at the initial, primary and secondary levels must develop teaching activities, as well as institutional communications with the rules of the Spanish language, its grammatical norms and the official guidelines for its teaching.
“The results of the evaluations show a setback in language and writing. That is why it is very important to clarify the contents well so that the children learn in the clearest way possible.”, he added.
The use of “e” to mark a non-binary gender will then no longer be accepted, nor will the “x” or “@” in writing.

The authorities justified the extent to which the evaluation method used to measure the educational indices of the City of Buenos Aires showed a drop in learning levels.
Of a total of 40,335 primary school students, only 14.9% are at advanced levels of learning in language practices, while 34.2% remain at a basic level and 6.4% were unable to answer simple questions in texts without complexity.
In the case of secondary education, of a total of 40,865 students, the advanced level represents 13.6%, only 32.9% is at a basic level of reading comprehension and 18.7% could not solve the exam .
