The climate summit in Glasgow was due to end on Friday evening at 6 p.m. local time, but the 197 participating countries have still not reached a final agreement. Negotiations will continue on Saturday morning, summit chairman Alok Sharma said, according to several news agencies. Gabon speaks to the AP news agency of a stalemate. This would have been caused by the attitude of the United States and the European Union. The participating countries disagree about, among other things, phasing out coal use and financial climate aid for poorer countries.

US climate envoy John Kerry has to British Sky News said that texts in the final agreement should not be further watered down after it became known that the parties had had passages about CO2 reduction, the phasing out of coal and subsidizing fossil projects reformulated. Modifications to that latter intention, in particular, would be “the definition of insanity,” according to Kerry. As far as he is concerned, subsidies for fossil fuels will disappear.
The Dutch European Commissioner Frans Timmermans (Climate) finds the weakening of passages “a very bad signal”. He went on to say that limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees is not just a political necessity — it’s also “personal”. An unlivable world must be prevented for future generations, including his 1-year-old grandson. The EU is calling for a phased farewell to coal use and more financial aid for poorer countries in the climate transition.
“1.5 degrees is about avoiding a future for our children and grandchildren that is unliveable. I want my one-year old grandson to live a peaceful, prosperous life, like I want it for everybody’s children and grandchildren.”

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg tells AP that he fears the lack of real results “as long as the main goal is to find loopholes in the rules and not to take real action”.
