Brazilians across the country have struggled to find AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine to take the second dose. With a low stock of the immunizing agent developed by the University of Oxford, the Ministry of Health released municipalities to apply Pfizer’s vaccine as a substitute for the second dose of AstraZeneca.
According to Uol, a technical note from the Ministry of Health says that the exchange of these immunizers is recommended “in exceptional situations, where it is not possible to administer the second dose of the vaccine with a vaccine from the same manufacturer, either for specific contraindications or for absence of that immunizing agent in the country”. A technical note from the Ministry of Health, published at the end of last month, says that the possibility has a scientific basis and cites two studies to support the possibility of mixing vaccines, technically called interchangeability.
+ Lack of AstraZeneca for 2nd dose affects 74% of posts in the city of SP
A survey carried out by Estadão on the municipal platform De Olho na Fila showed that, this Friday (13), around 74% of the 610 points of immunization against covid-19 in the city of São Paulo face a lack of the AstraZeneca vaccine for the second dose .
The shortage is mostly of the immunizing agent produced by Oxford University with the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, but there are records in some stations of shortage of doses from other manufacturers, such as Coronavac and Pfizer.
Vale highlights that between April and July 60 million doses were delivered, but AstraZeneca reduced the volume of shipments to Brazil and in July 14.5 million doses were sent. The forecast is that in August it will reach only 11.6 million.
