Nissan and Honda have announced the start of joint research on strategic technologies in the area of Next-generation software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms. This agreement builds on the memorandum of understanding signed by the companies on March 15 to begin discussions on a strategic partnership for artificial intelligence and electrification. A further memorandum was signed to deepen the framework of the strategic partnership to strengthen their collaboration in pursuing the goals of zero carbon emissions and reducing road accidents.
Nissan and Honda Software Platform Development
Both companies are promoting R&D and investments in various technologies to promote the diffusion and evolution of electric vehicles, in particular SDVs. Both Nissan and Honda consider software development to be strategic in this sense, for the diffusion of some technologies including autonomous driving, connectivity and artificial intelligenceThe agreement therefore provides for a joint research path on the fundamental technologies for the next generation SDV platform for the duration of one year, then evaluating the progress achieved and the possible commercialization of the software architecture.
Battery Sharing
The partnership also includes cooperation in the battery field, with the mutual supply and technology sharing. Pooling the battery technologies and resources of both companies will enable a wide range of battery options, from high-power to low-cost models, as well as cost-saving effects through economies of scale. In this regard, Honda and Nissan have agreed to common specifications for their battery cell modules for electric vehicles from a medium- to long-term perspective, with the aim of allow the batteries they intend to purchase to be usable in vehicles of both brands. Honda and Nissan will explore supplying lithium-ion electric vehicle batteries produced by LH Battery Company, Inc., a joint venture between Honda and LG Energy Solution, to Nissan in North America after 2028.
Model integration
The two Japanese brands will also collaborate to make the specifications of their respective e-Axle for use in next-generation electric vehicles. The first agreed step is to share motors and inverters. Finally, Nissan and Honda will also evaluate the integration of models in specific regions.
