There winter season approaches, and with it the pitfalls and fears for those who have to use their car to get around grow. Because if it is true that on the one hand there are those who are not afraid of bad weather and darkness, on the other hand there are those who do not feel ready to face them. To confirm this substantial bipolarity was Nissan, which led a Research (which involved 6,000 drivers across Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the UK) on how European drivers prepare to drive during the cold season.
The result of the research speaks for itself: 36% of motorists surveyed said they do not be ready driving in difficult weather conditions and shortening days, while 27% said they did not know or do not use the safety technologies of their car. In addition, 55% of respondents admitted that they did not feel comfortable behind the wheel in winter, 45% that they wanted to have received adequate preparation for driving in adverse weather conditions and 55% that they had canceled or postponed a trip due to bad weather. The darkness and the fog are the two atmospheric factors most feared by motorists: only 49% of those questioned have full confidence in their ability to adapt the vehicle’s lights to road conditions, i.e. they know precisely when it is appropriate to turn on the sidelights or dipped beams, and only 59% say they know how to do it independently.
The situation becomes complicated in the case of snowy or icy roads. From this point of view, too, the research conducted by Nissan is a testament to this: 52% of the motorists interviewed do not wait for the windshield to be completely demisted before setting off, while 75% do not have full confidence in their ability to stop a vehicle skating on an icy road. 63%, however, are not entirely sure which tires to use when it snows or on the correct stopping distance in case of bad weather. This last aspect is not a source of concern for many: 37% in fact tend not to decrease their speed during winter and only 66% have the brakes checked before the bad season.
