Nio has opened a battery exchange station in Norway, where the Chinese manufacturer has been selling its ES8 SUV since September. It is the manufacturer’s first station outside of China, where there are already 500 of these switching stations. There will be 20 more switch stations in Norway by the end of 2022. After that, it will be Germany’s turn.
How does it work?
How do these exchange stations work? Instead of having to wait for a relatively slow charge during a long ride, Nio offers a battery change that takes just 5 minutes. Nio customers who want to use this service must purchase their car with the battery as a monthly subscription, also known as ‘Battery as a Service’ (BaaS).
Then you get a replaceable battery so you can get back on the road quickly. Your ‘old’ battery is then recharged and ready for the next Nio. The battery subscription costs 140 to 200 euros per month (standard vs. long range), for which you would get 6 exchanges per month for free.
