The Nicaraguan government renounced the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Friday (19) and announced the group’s departure, after the approval of a resolution condemning the country’s general elections, held on the 7th. the dictator Daniel Ortega obtained the right to start his fifth term.
“We are resigning and disassociating ourselves from the Organization of American States. We are withdrawing from the OAS,” said Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada at a press conference in Managua.
On Tuesday (16), the National Assembly of Nicaragua, in which the governing party has an absolute majority, had asked Ortega to withdraw the country from the inter-American entity.
In a text approved with the vote of 83 deputies and three abstentions, the Parliament summoned Ortega, “in his capacity as head of state and head of government, to denounce the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS), following the mechanism stipulated in article 143 of said instrument”.
Ortega, who returned to power in 2007, was re-elected for his fifth five-year term, the fourth consecutive term, along with his wife, Rosario Murillo, who is in addition to first lady and vice president.
In addition to the OAS, the European Union and most of the rest of the international community did not recognize the Nicaraguan elections, among other reasons, due to the absence of seven opposition presidential candidates who were arrested on charges of “treason”. Among them was independent Cristiana Chamorro, favorite for the election.
Measures such as the removal of three opposition parties, the repeal of electoral observation, discrepancies in the level of participation and a series of laws that restricted participation in the process were also criticized.
Among the countries that congratulated Ortega for his re-election are allies such as Bolivia, North Korea, Cuba, Iran, Palestine, Russia, Syria, Venezuela and Vietnam.
