Nicaraguan judicial authorities, subservient to dictator Daniel Ortega, stripped Nicaraguan nationality on Tuesday (10) of the 135 political prisoners who were released from prison and expelled to Guatemala last Thursday and ordered the confiscation of their assets, according to a decision by the Managua Court of Appeals.

Nicaragua’s Sandinista-controlled Supreme Court of Justice said in a press release that the first chamber of the Court of Appeals in Managua issued a judicial resolution “ordering the loss of Nicaraguan nationality of 135 people convicted of criminal acts that violated the sovereignty, independence and self-determination of the Nicaraguan people.”

The 135 individuals who lost their nationality also incited and promoted “violence, hatred, terrorism and economic destabilization, disturbing peace, security and constitutional order,” the decision alleged.

The resolution states that this decision was taken based on the Political Constitution, the Penal Code, the Law for the Defense of the Rights of the People to Independence, Sovereignty and Self-Determination for Peace and the Special Law that regulates the loss of Nicaraguan nationality.

In this order, the resolution on the merits ordered the confiscation of all assets of the convicted, “in order to respond for the serious material and immaterial damages that their criminal activities caused to the population and the country; thereby effectively delivering justice to the victims of these crimes”, argued the Judiciary.

“In this way, the Criminal Chamber confirms the commitment and the constitutional legal duty to hold accountable the authors, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these condemnable criminal acts against our population and, in this sense, the decision on the merits constitutes another step towards the legacy of peace, solidarity, dignity, justice, truth and peaceful coexistence that our people demand”, concludes the note.

The United States announced last Thursday the release of 135 political prisoners unjustly detained in Nicaragua, who were received in Guatemala. Neither the US, Guatemala, nor Nicaragua have made the list of beneficiaries official.

Nicaragua has been experiencing a political and social crisis since April 2018, which worsened after the November 2021 elections, in which Ortega was “re-elected” for a fifth term – the fourth consecutive – with his main competitors in prison and without independent international observation.

The dictator then expelled them from the country and deprived them of their nationality and political rights after accusing them of “coup” and “treason to the country”.
