Nicaragua | Nicaraguan police arrested a Catholic bishop after besieging his rectory for two weeks

The Nicaraguan government, which is accused of becoming increasingly autocratic, and the church have been at odds for several years.

Nicaraguan the bishop of the Catholic Church has been arrested by the police by Rolando Alvarez after besieging his parish in the city of Matagalpa for two weeks. The reason for the arrest was said to be “destabilizing and provocative” actions.

According to the bishop’s supporters, the arrest was made violently. The authorities have said that the bishop has been taken to the capital Managua, 130 kilometers away from Matagalpa, and he is under house arrest.

Church has confirmed that Alvarez is staying in a house belonging to his family. Cardinal Lepoldo Brenes was allowed to visit the bishop and told that his physical condition had deteriorated.

Nicaragua’s increasingly autocratic regime and the church have been at odds since 2018 protests that left hundreds dead.

The country’s president Daniel Ortega said the protests were an attempt by the US to oust him from power. In the last presidential election in 2021, all of Ortega’s main rivals were in prison.

According to the European Union, there are more than 180 political prisoners in Nicaragua.
