NFL kicks off
:
Rich TV program, three own stars – and mega hype about the game in Munich
Dusseldorf Guest performance in Munich, plenty of TV presence – and your own stars right in the middle: The new NFL season promises to be a very special one from a German perspective too. Tonight it starts with the game of the defending champion.
The fans are already counting down the days until the circus comes to town. A million tickets could allegedly have been sold for the NFL guest performance in Munich’s Allianz Arena, but after around 55 minutes all the tickets were gone.
“The boom in Germany has really grown since I was last there,” said Amon-Ra St. Brown in an interview with Sport-Bild. In the summer, the wide receiver from the Detroit Lions paid his homeland a visit for the first time in seven years – and he was thrilled.
If one more proof of the new popularity of the sport in this country was needed – the mega hype about the duel between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with superstar Tom Brady and the Seattle Seahawks on November 13th in Munich provides it. “The Germans are real fans, they love football. They watch all the games, even late at night,” St. Brown said. “It’s very refreshing” to see “how excited everyone is. The hype surrounding the first game in Munich is really blatant.”
At the age of 22, Amon-Ra St. Brown is one of three Germans who made it into the 53-man squad of an NFL franchise at the start of the season. His brother Equanimeous wants to break through after moving from the Green Bay Packers to the Chicago Bears, fullback Jakob Johnson is leaving the New England Patriots and coach Bill Belichick behind after three years and is now playing with the Raiders in Las Vegas.
The main roles are likely to fall to others first. The Buffalo Bills around star quarterback Josh Allen, who is required to start with his team at the defending champion Los Angeles Rams (night on Friday, 2:20 a.m., ProSieben), Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs and, of course, Brady. To the eternal Brady. The Inevitable, who is now 45 and entering his 23rd season after retiring from retirement.
“Tom would not have come back to the league for this new season after the end of his career if he himself were not convinced that he could win the title again,” said Sebastian Vollmer in the FAZ interview.
The verdict comes from a qualified source: from 2009 to 2016, Vollmer played alongside the star quarterback for the New England Patriots and won the Super Bowl twice. With these successes, he was one of the pioneers of the football boom in Germany.
In the new season, fans of the sport can look forward to 56 games on German free TV – including the game in Munich and the complete play-offs including the Super Bowl on February 12, 2023. ProSieben or ProSieben Maxx will be broadcast every Sunday Live games, there is also another encounter in the live stream on ran.de. The DAZN streaming service rounds off the full program with many other live games.
A television deal for the coming year shows how great the potential of the US league is in Germany: RTL will join in 2023, the Cologne broadcaster has snatched away the rights from ProSieben. “After soccer, American football is the most popular sport among 14- to 49-year-olds in this country,” said RTL. And interest is growing.
