Newcastle United have announced the signing of Dutch defender Sven Putman, after reaching an agreement with French club Lille in principle.
Newcastle stated on its official website that it entered into a competition with a number of European clubs to obtain the signature of the 22-year-old, who signed a contract linking him to the team for five years, after he succeeded in winning with Lille the League title and the French Super Cup in two seasons he spent there.
He added that Putman graduated from Ajax Academy and joined the Heerenveen team on loan, before joining Lille, where he participated in the Champions League and European League, and he was the captain of the Dutch under-21 team, and was called up to the first team in November 2020.
The English club added that the Dutch player, who is fluent in the use of his left foot, became coach Eddie Howe’s third signing, after the signing of Australian striker Matt Targett and goalkeeper Nick Pope earlier this month.
For his part, Putman said in statements to his new club’s website: I am really happy and can’t wait to start a new adventure, it is the best day of my life to sign with Newcastle FC, it is the day I worked for and I am very excited.
Newcastle finished last season in eleventh place with 49 points in the English Premier League standings.
