It is no secret that Mexico City has a gentrification problem, which has led to increased housing prices. To remedy this, the Government began to approve a series of regulations to the laws of TourismHousing and Reconstruction. Now, today a new measure has been confirmed to remedy this, and that is that No property may be rented on digital platforms for more than half of the year.
The proposal established by Martí Batres, head of the capital’s government, has finally been approved, establishing that no property can be rented for more than half a year on digital platforms such as Airbnb. Likewise, These digital sites have been prohibited from using properties intended for social housingas well as those rebuilt following the earthquake of September 19, 2017. This is what deputy César Emilio Guijosa Hernández commented:
“This legislative instrument proposes a comprehensive solution to mitigate gentrification, mainly through the regulation of digital tourism, establishing limits on the number of nights that a property can allocate for this use.”
This is the third regulation for platforms like Airbnb since 2023. In this way, the Government of Mexico City plans to combat gentrification and increase in living that some areas of the capital have experienced since the pandemic due to digital nomads. We can only wait for more measures of this type to become a reality.
For its part, Airbnb did not issue a statement on the matter, and it is likely that they will not. On related topics, you can learn about the measures that the Government has taken to regulate these digital platforms here.
Author’s Note:
This is good news. Although half a year is still a long time, the important thing is that measures are already being taken to regulate Airbnb and other digital platforms, something that may affect tourism, but substantially benefits all the inhabitants of the City.
