The new CDU leadership is to be elected in January, and applicants can be nominated from this Saturday. The new Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia brings an option into play that is still unfamiliar to the CDU.
Düsseldorf – The new NRW Prime Minister and state party leader Hendrik Wüst sees opportunities for a team solution in a future CDU federal chairmanship.
“I think it is achievable in the CDU of Germany that there is as broad a consensus as possible – possibly a solution in which several people with ambitions come together to form a team,” said Wüst of the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday).
Nomination period starts
From this Saturday on, applicants can be nominated for the post of CDU chairman. The deadline is November 17th. The new party leadership is to be elected at a party congress in January in Hanover. Before that, the party members will be asked about Armin Laschet’s successor.
Wüst said that the ideal case would be “that you no longer have a controversial vote”. But if it comes to competition, it is not a misfortune, but simply a democratic process, the newspaper quoted the CDU politician as saying. The phase of personnel reorientation should be as short as possible. Wüst was elected Prime Minister as Laschet’s successor at the end of October. dpa
