The new raids came after the Israeli army issued evacuation warnings to residents of neighborhoods in the suburb, from which the majority of its residents were displaced, estimated to number about 850,000 people before the current escalation.
Israeli army spokesman Avichai Adraee published a map on the “X” platform, showing two buildings in the Burj al-Barajneh and Hadath neighborhoods, addressing those who live near them, saying: “You are located near Hezbollah installations and interests. For your safety and the safety of your family members, you must evacuate these buildings.” And those immediately adjacent to it and stay away from it for a distance of no less than 500 metres.”
The official National News Agency in Lebanon subsequently said that two raids targeted the area, the first “on the vicinity of Al-Kafaat and the second on Burj Al-Barajneh.”
It was later reported that “enemy warplanes launched a new and violent raid on the vicinity of Al-Haddat-Al-Kafaat” in the suburb.
An Agence France-Presse photographer saw smoke rising in the air over the suburb shortly after the raids, while journalists heard the sound of an explosion.
The National Agency had previously reported that 6 “consecutive” raids had occurred, targeting different neighborhoods in the suburb.
The air strikes on Monday were not limited to the southern suburb, but also affected areas in southern Lebanon, including coastal villages.
The Israeli army announced earlier Monday that it would soon target the “marine area,” and said in a statement that it would work “in the maritime area against Hezbollah activities (…) For your safety, refrain from being at sea or on the beach from now until Further notice.”
Shortly after this warning, a number of “fishermen moved their boats from the fishermen’s port in Sidon to North Awali (…) to continue their fishing work on Tuesday,” according to the National Agency.
The Awali River empties into the sea in the city of Sidon, about 60 kilometers north of the border between Lebanon and Israel.
