Yahya Sinwar, the “butcher of Khan Younis”, who replaced Ismail Haniyeh as political leader of Hamas, is demanding an unusual guarantee to continue the ceasefire negotiations with Israel: that he will not be killed during this process.
Sources told the Israeli broadcaster Channel 12, Sinwar has reconsidered the “glory” of dying fighting for Hamas and now wants “immunity” against a possible targeted attack by Israeli forces as the parties negotiate a ceasefire agreement in the Middle East conflict.
According to the sources of Channel 12, the terrorist leader reportedly sent a message asking for such “immunity” through Qatari mediators, where he also requested concrete guarantees that his life “will not be threatened during the ongoing negotiations”. Qatar, which is the main mediator country in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas, in turn, reportedly responded that Sinwar’s personal safety “is not the central point” of the negotiations and that the focus should be on the return of the hostages to Israel and the advancement of talks between the parties to end the war.
Sinwar was the main coordinator of Hamas’ terrorist attacks against Israeli territory, which culminated in 1,200 people being brutally massacred. He is Israel’s main target in Gaza, where, according to Israeli government authorities, he has been held deep in the city’s tunnels.
Sinwar’s demand for security “guarantees” would probably not be met by Israel, since he is currently the main figure in Hamas and the man most wanted by the country’s authorities.
