After months of relaxation and a return to “normal” everyday life, Israel is currently fighting the fourth wave of corona. The consequences could be drastic.
Jerusalem – For many, Israel has long been a role model in fighting the coronavirus. With a quick vaccination campaign and the resulting high vaccination rate, the country seemed to have Corona under control.
Soon, the corona measures gradually fell away in Israel. Public life returned to normal almost four months ago, as did everyday work. People were able to go to restaurants or celebrate parties and family celebrations again without any worries.
Corona in Israel: Numbers are increasing threateningly – renewed lockdown can no longer be ruled out
In the meantime, however, there is a risk of relapse into times that were believed to have been overcome. The fourth wave is here. Even a new lockdown is considered possible. Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had to reintroduce some corona restrictions, including the mask requirement at major events. Health Minister Nachman Ash spoke several times in July that a further lockdown could not be ruled out.
Prime Minister Bennett announced through a spokesman that he had a new lockdown “not on the agenda”. But the current corona numbers are alarmingly high. The seven-day incidence was 417.9 on August 14 (source: Our World in Data). For comparison: On June 10th, Israel was able to bring the value down to 0.8.
In addition, the government said that the number of hospital admissions of corona patients is currently threatening. This doubles every ten days, and the Israeli health system is threatened with collapse.
Corona: Israel wants to stop fourth wave with refreshing third-party vaccinations against the virus
The state in the Middle East is now trying to stop the negative corona trend with a third vaccination. Israel wants to persuade all people over 60 years of age who already have full vaccination protection to have a third vaccination. Overall, about 60 percent of the 9.4 million Israelis received two vaccinations. Most of them received the Biontech vaccine. As in this country, however, Israel is fighting against increasing vaccination fatigue.
According to the Israeli Ministry of Health, the effects of the Biontech / Pfizer corona vaccine wears off over time. The effectiveness is expected to drop from originally over 90 percent to around 40 percent within a few months.
To counter this, the corona vaccination has already been refreshed in more than half a million people. All affected people are either over 60 years old or have a weakened immune system. Worldwide, it will be closely monitored whether third-party vaccinations are the key to success in the fight against Corona. Israel is once again taking the lead. (kh)
