The nationwide seven-day incidence of new corona infections is in the three-digit range for the first time in months.
Berlin – The demand for an early end to the epidemic situation of national scope therefore continues to cause discussions. While Saarland’s Prime Minister Tobias Hans (CDU) backed the corresponding demand from Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) at the weekend, City Council President Burkhard Jung warned of a “patchwork” in the fight against the pandemic.
Hans told the “Bild am Sonntag” that he welcomed Spahn’s advance. “The pandemic is not over, but the vaccinations have made it less terrifying,” he said. “We have to take that into account.”
Even after the epidemic has ended, the federal states must have the opportunity to adopt measures, Hans said. “But you can’t lump all countries together,” he added. “Federal states with a high vaccination quota must be able to regain their freedoms,” said the Saarland Prime Minister, in whose state all outdoor measures are to be lifted on Friday.
Health insurance chief Andreas Gassen also supported Spahn’s demand as “ultimately logical”, as he told the “Rheinische Post” on Saturday. “That does not mean the immediate end of all measures,” explained the head of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV).
“But we will experience that there will be different approaches from region to region, which of course also depend on regional factors such as vaccination rates, numbers of infections, age distribution and hospital occupancy rates.” At a certain point and with sufficient lead time, it would then be possible to “put the necessary protective and defensive measures in the hands of the citizens,” said Gassen.
Health Minister Spahn had recently announced that he wanted to let the current epidemic emergency of national scope expire at the end of November. On Friday, however, the Prime Minister’s Conference of the federal states continued to demand uniform nationwide rules for combating the corona pandemic.
The SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach also warned against ending the epidemic situation “without replacement regulation”. It would have to be ensured that the 2G or 3G rules could continue to be practiced indoors and that there was a mask requirement in local public transport, he told the “Passauer Neue Presse”.
City Council President Jung spoke out in the newspapers of the Funke media group for a nationwide framework in the fight against Corona. The epidemic situation of national importance “either has to be maintained or there has to be a transition period”, he demanded. “We can’t use a patchwork quilt for the last few miles of the pandemic.”
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Saturday, the nationwide seven-day incidence with a value of 100.0 had reached the three-digit range for the first time since May; on Sunday morning the RKI reported an incidence of 106.3. According to this, 13,732 new infections were registered within one day.
The incidence value, which indicates the number of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days, has been rising continuously for a week and a half. The incidence value has long been the decisive variable for the corona measures taken by the federal and state governments. Due to the progress made in the vaccination campaign, other values are now playing a bigger role – in particular the number of corona patients in hospitals.
According to a survey, however, the majority of German citizens are skeptical of any easing. According to an Insa survey for “Bild am Sonntag”, for which 1005 people were interviewed on Friday, 63 percent believe that the current measures are just right or not extensive enough, only 35 percent consider them to be excessive. 56 percent are therefore afraid of a corona wave in winter.
