The Chinese government has said that celebrities should follow socialist values, traditions and customs, as China is fighting the country’s “celebrity culture”, because, according to it, it is causing social unrest.
The announcement complements China’s crackdown on the country’s growing entertainment industry, as officials battle celebrity scandals and online fan groups, which they say are causing social unrest.
According to Business Insider, the new law also prohibits celebrities from spreading rumors, publishing false or private information, provoking fan groups, and encouraging fans to participate in “illegal fundraising or irrational investing.”
On the same day, the China Association of Performing Arts banned 88 people from the live broadcast, including Chinese pop star Kris Wu, who was recently accused of sexual assault.
The government said the list aims to “strengthen self-discipline in the field” and “prevent illegal and unethical artists” from returning to the field.
