A surprise is not always desired. Just ask that single buddy of yours who went out for a night in Thailand. Sometimes it’s fine if something is exactly as you expect it to be. Take this Audi RS 3. The specifications were already known and actually the appearance as well. The only real surprises were the paintwork and the places where Audi has applied black accents. Oh, and speaking of colours: Kyalami green (pictured here) and Kemora gray (not pictured) are only available on the Audi RS 3, not the S3 or A3.
Specifications Audi RS 3
The 2.5-liter five-cylinder with a turbo again produces 400 hp. Torque increases from 480 to 500 Nm and is available over a wider rev range (from 2,250 to 5,600 rpm). The minor adjustments are enough to shrink the 0-100 time from 4.1 seconds to 3.8 seconds, with the help of launch control. Incidentally, we expect that the 0-100 time of the new Audi RS 3 is quite conservative and that it is somewhat faster in practice – that was the same with the previous generation. The top speed is 290 km/h.
The new Audi RS 3 is therefore less powerful than the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S with 421 hp, but 0.1 second faster to 100 km/h. The couple is the same. Like the Mercedes (and the Golf R), the fast hatch can now switch off its front-wheel drive for a bit of drifting. Audi calls the function ‘RS Torque Rear’. In addition, there are the RS Performance mode, RS Individual, Dynamic, Auto and Comfort.
Special are the headlights on the RS 3, which have an LED field of three by five. Here you can show various patterns, such as a checkered flag or an S, for example. The aerodynamics are also a bit more extreme, with air vents behind the front wheel arches, for example. At the front, the new Audi RS 3 is a full 33 millimeters wider than the previous model. Furthermore, both the Sportback and the Limousine have two cannons sticking out of the rear bumper.
Audi processes black elements around the grille of the Audi RS 3. It is reminiscent of the Seat Ibiza Bocanegra from more than ten years ago, a special version of the faster Ibiza FR. That in turn was based on the Bocanegra concept car. For the first time, you can order the roof of the sedan in a black color. Accents such as the mirror caps and the rear spoiler are available in carbon fiber.
The screen in the Audi RS 3
The interior is largely from the Audi A3 and S3 that we already know, but slightly more decorated with stitching and accent colors. Of course there are thicker RS seats and the screen behind the wheel provides more performance information, such as your 0-100 time just set or your lap times on the track.
