New restrictions come into force for the entire country
Coronavirus infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week exceeded the 400-case level for the first time this Wednesday in Germany, reaching a rate of 404.5 infections. They are already 17 days followed by successive daily records. The incidence rate was 399.8 this Tuesday, a week ago of 319.5, while on November 8 it exceeded the level of 200 cases for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. There are, however, districts in this country, especially in the regions of Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia, where the incidence rate has skyrocketed above 1,000 cases. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), responsible for coordinating the fight against coronavirus in Germany, also highlighted the record of 66,884 new infections in the last 24 hours. Almost 5.5 million inhabitants have been infected since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of deaths increased in the last day by 335 people to a total of 99,768, added the RKI.
Meanwhile, the measures adopted last week to suppress the spread of the virus at the meeting held by the acting federal chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the prime ministers of the 16 federal states came into effect on Wednesday. Among other restrictions, from today it will be necessary to have a certificate of vaccination or cure or a negative coronavirus test for the use of public transport throughout the country. Punctual controls will be carried out by inspectors accompanied in many cases by police officers who may apply severe fines. Merkel also met last night with the leaders of the three parties that negotiate the new government coalition – Social Democrats (SPD), Greens and Liberals (FDP) – to address the fight against the pandemic when the talks of the new tripartite are about to conclude. and the announcement of an agreement to train an executive for the next four years is expected in the next few days.
In addition, today, more severe restrictions begin to operate in the federal states most affected by the epidemic, bringing with them the social marginalization of the unvaccinated. In many districts and regions, you will only be able to access many closed premises, from shops with non-essential items to bars and restaurants, if you have been vaccinated or have been cured of the disease. In some states a recent negative test is additionally required. Given the critical situation in many of its hospitals, in Bavaria a good number of patients infected with the coronavirus and admitted to intensive care units are being transferred to other federal states with greater capacities and that have not yet been overwhelmed by the growing number of patients in serious condition, as announced by the German Interdisciplinary Association of Intensive and Emergency Medicine (DIVI). Thuringia, Saxony, Brandenburg and Berlin have also activated that emergency operation.
For its part, the German Ethical Council seems willing to renounce its rejection of the issuance of a mandatory general vaccination, while the voices that demand this measure increase to force the 12 million adults who refuse to be immunized to do so. “We have not discussed the issue yet, but there are signs of change” given the fact that “the numbers of infected increase and it is not possible to control this acute crisis situation.” Among those who demand the introduction of mandatory vaccination are several regional prime ministers, such as those of Saxony or Hesse, who consider that, although the measure would arrive late to stop the fourth wave of coronavirus that the country suffers, it would serve to avoid a fifth or sixth wave.
