Neurologist Filonskaya: migraine and headache differ in duration
Migraine and cluster headache differ in the duration of the attack, as well as many other factors. Them in conversation with “Evening Moscow” listed neurologist of the Fomin Clinic network in Krasnodar Veronica Filonskaya.
Cluster headaches generally last between 15 and 180 minutes. Migraine – from 4 to 72 hours. For some people, migraine attacks can last for several days without proper treatment. Another difference is the number of attacks per day. Migraines typically have one attack, but cluster headaches can occur up to eight times a day. Also, migraine can change intensity, when during one attack the pain subsides a little, and then overtakes again.
Another difference is localization. Migraines can sometimes be felt all over the head, but most often occur on only one side of the head – behind the eye, in the back or in front. Cluster pain is usually located in the temporal lobe or around the eye. With migraine, a person wants peace and quiet, while with cluster pain the opposite is true – the patient experiences severe motor restlessness.
Previously, Elena Baranova, head of the department of functional diagnostics of diseases of the nervous system at the Federal Center for Brain and Neurotechnology of the FMBA of Russia, recommended such non-drug treatments as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), physical therapy, some methods of physiotherapy, reflexology and hyperbaric oxygenation to combat migraines.
