Netflix is testing the possibility of raising the monthly subscription fee for its services, if its customers share their accounts with relatives or friends, and it will already start testing this in 5 Latin American countries.
According to a report by the American “Time” magazine, the new “Netflix” policy will be applied in Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and the Dominican Republic.
Netflix subscribers in these countries will have to pay a small additional amount, equivalent to $1.7 in Argentina and $3 in the other four countries, over the value of the monthly subscription, if they share their accounts with others.
This increase will be applied if “Netflix” is used on television screens only, with the exception of smaller smart devices such as phones and computers, as the giant company seeks through this step to increase its revenues.
The company had recently announced that it had lost 970,000 subscribers in the period from last April to June.
The online streaming platform plans to launch a new ad-supported category of subscriptions next year, and warned that the rising dollar was also affecting revenue from overseas subscribers.
While the number of customers lost by “Netflix” in the second quarter was less than expected, it estimated that the number of new subscribers in the period from July to September will reach one million, according to Sky News Arabia.
In a letter to shareholders, the company said it studied the slowdown further, which it attributed to a variety of factors including password sharing, competition and economic recession.
Netflix remains the dominant streaming service worldwide, with nearly 221 million global subscribers.
