Four years have passed since the release of The Last of Part II. Since then, Naughty Dog gave us a remake of the first installment in the series, as well as a remastering of the second title. Although many are already getting bored of seeing the same property over and over again, Neil Druckmann, director of the studio, has revealed his plans for the team’s next game.
Through a new interview As part of Sony’s presentation focused on its next 10 years, Druckmann revealed that Naughty Dog’s next game could redefine the mainstream public’s perception of this medium entertainment and art. This is what he said about it:
“I have been lucky enough to work on several dream projects and am currently excited about a new one, which may be the most exciting yet.
There is a growing appreciation for games that transcends all age groups, unlike when I was a child. This change is highlighted by our foray into television with The Last of Us, which I hoped would bridge the gap between gamers and non-gamers.
The success of the program has given prominence to games, illustrating the rich and immersive experiences they offer. This visibility excites me not only for our current project, but also for the broader potential of games to captivate a global audience.
I’m eager to see how this new game resonates, especially after the success of The Last of Us, as it could redefine the general public’s perceptions of gaming.
You have to take risks to find new ideas that connect with audiences, and although Uncharted was a hit on the charts, it was important for our studio to innovate again with a new franchise like The Last of Us.
Many companies would insist on sticking to profitable franchises, but SIE’s culture and philosophy allow us to pursue new ideas. Art requires risk; You can’t design it perfectly and predict how successful it will be. “I am incredibly grateful that SIE trusts us to build on our past successes and explore new creative avenues.”
Unfortunately, at the moment we do not have a clear idea about the next Naughty Dog project. Some time ago, Druckmann revealed that he already had the idea for The Last of Us Part III. Along with this, the director also mentioned that he is interested in making experiences far from blockbusters. Considering his recent statements, It seems like the studio’s next project would be a completely new property, but that will not abandon the classic narrative style of this team. On related topics, you can learn more about Druckmann’s statements about his future project here. Likewise, this is what we know about The Last of Us Part III.
Author’s Note:
The idea of redefining gaming for mainstream audiences is a statement that leaves out what makes video games special in the first place. The Last of Us is such an important work because it is something that can only happen in this medium, and by trying to create something that everyone, in theory, can enjoy, part of the essence of the medium will be destroyed.
