This week some statements have emerged from Neil Druckmannhead of Naughty Dog, on the sidelines of the Sony conference regarding the company’s vision of the future of entertainment, and in parallel with the presentation for shareholders, also emerged affirmations on the new game from the authors of The Last of Uswhich subsequently were correct and clarified by Druckmann.
In particular, it turned out that the new Naughty Dog game will redefine the perception of video games by the mainstream public, an undoubtedly ambitious but also understandable statement on the part of the authors of some of the best-known series currently on the video game market and who recently also conquered other media.
In the same interview, Druckmann also made another statement that caused controversy, the one regarding the use of generative AI to improve narrative, which immediately led to criticism from other developers. In the following hours, Druckmann clarified better what he meant to say, but this especially regarding the first statement, without modifying the one regarding artificial intelligence.
The original version of the Druckmann interview
On the matter of the Naughty Dog game destined to change the public’s perception of video games, it seems that the team leader was misinterpreted, or in any case his words were misreported and out of contextaccording to what was subsequently reported.
“That’s not really what I said“, Druckmann explained on Well this is the full account of what I said,” he wrote on X, reporting the complete transcript of that passage of the interview.
In fact, the passage on the redefining the perception of video games from the public is not present in the original interview. Instead we find a very honest reference to the fact of working with great collaborators.
The portion of the interview reported by Sony concluded with: “This exposure excites me not only for our new project but also for the game’s expanded ability to attract a global audience. I can’t wait to see how this game, especially after the success of The Last of Us, it will be able to redefine the mainstream audience’s perception of video games.”
The original interview instead seems to have a decidedly different conclusion, as appears from the complete transcript: “I’m curious to see how the world will react”, said Druckmann speaking about the new Naughty Dog game, “because The Last of Us, and the success got from the show, they got even people who don’t care much about video games to keep an eye on what we do next. I’m very excited to see what the reactions will be, and I’ve already said too much, so I’ll stop here. So you ask me what they are my dream projects. I’ve been very lucky to be able to work on my favorite games with some incredible collaborators and I’m very grateful to them.”
In short, there was evidently a clear change in the words in the editing done by Sony to release it to the media.
