Work will resume on Monday after residents reported “a large cloud of smoke” at the pier
The start of the works on the Hornillo pier, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, unleashed this Saturday a wave of complaints among the residents in this area, who denounced “a very strong smell, a large cloud of smoke and rings of solvent in the sea”. All this forced the City Council to send a municipal technician to the area to order the restoration work on this structure to be halted.
One of the affected neighbors was Jesús Martínez, who was at home with his wife and two children. «We woke up and there was a strong smell of solvent. I have looked out the window and I have seen a huge cloud of smoke and stains in the sea. All the neighbors have had to close the windows », he recounted.
As explained by the Councilor for Culture and Heritage, Maido Simó, “we had to send a technician. The operators have explained to us that what the neighbors were seeing was dust in suspension and that there was no risk to health. Despite this, we have decided to stop the work until Monday, when it will be studied whether to continue with this method or if, on the contrary, the tastings already carried out in the structures are sufficient to know the state in which the woods».
Simó assured that “it is evident that there was a large stain in the water, but no one has been put in danger. On Monday, in the event that the experts have to continue with this method, the installation of machinery to absorb this suspended dust will be assessed and the neighbors are not affected.
