The Russian military does not interfere in the work of the Ukrainian operators of the Chernobyl and Zaporizhia nuclear power plants, they only protect them. This was stated on March 4 by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, at a meeting of the Organization’s Security Council.
He called untrue statements that alleged Russian shelling caused a fire at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
“The security of the facilities is provided jointly by the Russian armed forces and the Ukrainian operators of nuclear installations,” the diplomat added.
As Nebenzya added, Kyiv and the West are inciting artificial hysteria over the situation in Ukraine.
“Today’s meeting is another attempt by the Kiev authorities to stir up artificial hysteria about what is happening in Ukraine, and their Western patrons are singing along with them in this,” the diplomat stressed.
Earlier on Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the situation around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. Zelensky and informed the chancellor about the current developments in the situation around the nuclear power plant.
The fact that a fire broke out on the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Ukraine was reported on the night of March 4. Andrey Tuz, a spokesman for the station, said that there was no threat of radiation spread. The fire was later put out. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that the fire did not affect the main equipment.
According to the official representative of the Russian Defense Ministry, Major General Igor Konashenkov, Ukrainian nationalists attempted a provocation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant at night, tried to open fire on it.
On February 17, the situation in Donbass escalated significantly due to intensive shelling by the Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons. The Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) announced a general mobilization, the evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia and asked for recognition of their independence.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the LNR and the DNR. Also, the President of the Russian Federation and the heads of both republics Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin signed agreements on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance. On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. The Ministry of Defense indicated that strikes would be carried out only on military targets, and not on civilian ones.
