Washington committed a “base provocation” by putting forward a draft resolution condemning referendums in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions on joining Russia for a vote in the UN Security Council. This was stated on September 30 by Russia’s permanent representative to the world organization Vasily Nebenzya before voting on the resolution of Albania and the United States condemning the Russian Federation because of the referenda.
“Such openly hostile actions on the part of the West are a rejection of interaction and cooperation in the council, a rejection of years of practice and experience. This is nothing more than a base provocation with a goal that everyone understands,” he said.
Nebenzya stressed that Russia cannot consider and support this project. In addition, there has never been a case in the past when the Security Council would support a draft that directly condemns one of the members of the council, he added.
Earlier, Nebenzia pointed out to the UN that the referendums were in line with international law.
Russia itself exercised its veto power at the UN Security Council against the US-Albanian draft resolution on referendums during the voting. The initiators pointed to the alleged illegality of Russia’s organization of referendums “in the regions of Ukraine, within the boundaries recognized by the international community.”
In addition, the authors of the resolution called on Moscow to immediately withdraw its armed forces from Ukraine. Ten countries supported the resolution, four more abstained.
On Friday, September 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed agreements on the inclusion of the DPR and LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions into the Russian Federation. The head of state assured that Russia would never betray the residents of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions and would help restore infrastructure in the regions. On the same day, the United States introduced a new package of sanctions against Russia, which included dozens of individuals and legal entities.
From 23 to 27 September, residents of the republics of Donbass and the liberated territories voted in referendums on the issue of joining Russia. In the DPR, 99.23% of citizens supported this option, in the LPR – 98.42%, in the Kherson region – 87.05%, and in the Zaporozhye region – 93.11%.
US President Joe Biden rejected the possibility of recognizing the inclusion of the liberated territories into the Russian Federation following the results of referendums. He noted that the referendums in the liberated territories are a “fiction” and a “violation of international law, including the UN Charter.” According to the American leader, a diplomatic settlement of the conflict in Ukraine is possible only in accordance with the basic provisions of the UN Charter.
The special military operation to protect the Donbass, the beginning of which the President of the Russian Federation announced on February 24, continues. The decision to hold it was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military, in connection with which the authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics turned to Moscow for help.
