The avalanche of people registered to cross the English Channel represents a new record on this route that connects the continent with the islands
About a thousand migrants have tried to cross the English Channel in the last 24 hours, a record number in a single day for this dangerous transit route characterized by constant bad weather and strong swells.
One of the images of the day has been that of a young woman wrapped in a red rescue coat while being transported to the shore of Dover, one of the hundreds of people rescued at sea and transferred to the port of Kent. Rescue ships have spent the past few hours navigating the Straits of Dover, populated by ships trying to cross the Canal on a day that surpasses the previous record of 853 people rescued earlier this month. Arrivals are spreading along the entire coast, even to Hastings Beach, some 86 kilometers southwest of Calais, France.
Two years ago, Britain’s Home Secretary Priti Patel promised to make overpass migration a “rare phenomenon” by spring 2020. In August last year, she pledged to make this route an “unworkable step”. Throughout this entire period, the British Government has agreed to pay France millions of euros so that the French authorities reinforce security on its north coast, the starting point for travel.
