In the past day, 394,759 positive corona tests were registered at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). It is a record number of new cases in one day, but the number is distorted: RIVM has eliminated a backlog in processing positive tests.
The computers were previously unable to process the explosively increased numbers due to the omikron variant, but the backlog has now been made up. Nearly 395,000 positive tests were registered between Monday morning and Tuesday morning, including 317,184 overdue after January 18. This means that there were 77,575 new positive tests. Last week there were a total of 824,301 confirmed and registered infections, but this also includes positive tests from previous weeks. Looking at the day of the results, there were 608,529 positive tests, which is about 2 percent more than last week.
RIVM has now gained a better view of the corona wave. Since the last week of January, the number of positive tests has been fairly stable. It fluctuates between 75,000 and 100,000.
The number of hospital admissions is increasing. Last week 1,266 people with the corona virus ended up in hospital, 7 percent more than the week before. In slightly more than half of these people, the corona virus is the reason for hospitalization. In about 30 percent, the coronavirus has aggravated another condition. For the rest of the people, the recording had nothing to do with the corona virus. Of the 1,266 admitted people, 118 people ended up in intensive care, which is an increase of 42 percent. The number of reported deaths fell slightly, from 66 to 54.
Slightly fewer people were tested for infection. That number dropped from just over a million to just below. Three in five tests (60.7 percent) were positive, which is a record. The reproduction number fell to 1.11, the lowest level since late December.
Parliamentary reporter Niels Klaassen spoke about the relaxations today:
Most Positive Tests
Amsterdam counted 12,044 positive tests last day, including the old cases. Tilburg follows with 9431 registered cases and Rotterdam with 8643. This is followed by The Hague (7653), Arnhem (7545) and Almere (7544). There were five more cases on Schiermonnikoog.
RIVM received eight reports of deaths. This concerns residents of the municipalities of Amsterdam, Den Bosch, Zaanstad, Purmerend, Leidschendam-Voorburg, Bloemendaal, Tubbergen and Uitgeest. The fact that the deaths of these people have now been reported does not mean that they have died in the past day. In addition, the actual number of deaths may be higher, as it is not mandatory to report that a corona patient has died from the infection.
54 deaths were recorded in the past week, an average of nearly eight a day. That is slightly lower than the level in recent weeks.
Disadvantage
Due to the high numbers, the Municipal Health Service (GGD) has not been able to pass on all positive test results to RIVM since January 18, 2022. The actual number of reports was therefore higher than the numbers reported daily by RIVM.
The reports from the test streets were first registered in a system of the GGDs. These reports were then sent to a second system of the GGD, in which the information from the source and contact investigation was entered manually. As of today, the new and previous positive tests that have not yet been reported to RIVM will go directly from the test streets to RIVM.
