The Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held the 287th session in the United Arab Emirates in Dubai, which was hosted by the Federal National Council yesterday, to be the first time that the Committee met outside the city of Geneva, the headquarters of the Union, due to the appreciation, confidence and activity of the Emirati parliamentary diplomacy. The participants in the meeting confirmed that the United Arab Emirates was chosen to host this historic meeting of the committee, whose periodic meetings were held at the headquarters of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva and within the work of the General Assembly and the Governing Council, given the values of tolerance and coexistence, the approach and principles adopted by the UAE and its keenness to promote Security, peace and stability efforts, which are the same values that the Inter-Parliamentary Union believes in and works on.
His Excellency Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council, opened the meeting of the Executive Committee, which was held under the chairmanship of His Excellency Duarte Pacheco, President of the Union, and in the presence of Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the Union, and the participation of His Excellency Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Head of the UAE Parliamentary Division Group in the Inter-Parliamentary Union, representative of the Arab Geopolitical Group in the Executive Committee. Representatives of the various geopolitical groups in the Federation, the Women’s Forum and the Youth Forum of the Federation. In his speech, His Excellency Saqr Ghobash welcomed the convening of the 287th session of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in the UAE, and said: “We expect it to be a platform for constructive dialogue and rich discussion on various issues, in a manner that serves the international parliamentary work and what it will reflect on in serving the interests of our countries and peoples.” He praised the great role of the Inter-Parliamentary Union on common issues of destiny as it is the parliamentary umbrella for the parliaments of the world, adding that the parliaments carry the messages of their peoples that converge and complement each other through a system of human values and ethics that are not linked to a specific geography, language, race or religion, but rather are Human values and ethics, which all monotheistic religions and moral beliefs affirmed as the basis of human existence and the permanence of its survival and advancement.
His Excellency added: “Today we meet with all our different races, beliefs and languages on the land of the United Arab Emirates, in which His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, declared 2019 the “Year of Tolerance”, which was also hosted in that year under the generous patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, signing the Human Fraternity Document.
Finding solutions to challenges
His Excellency Duarte Pacheco, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, expressed his thanks to the Federal National Council for its efforts, commitment and permanent presence in the work of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and joint work on finding solutions to the challenges facing the world, and the Council’s efforts in developing the work of the Union, and for hosting the meetings of the 287th session of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union International, in Dubai, which is a historical event; Because it is being held for the first time outside the IPU headquarters in Geneva, he also expressed his thanks to His Excellency Dr. Ali Al-Nuaimi for his efforts and his role in hosting these meetings.
