MADRID (Reuters) – The government of Spain’s northern Navarra region published a report on Friday identifying 52 cases of alleged sexual abuse of minors in Catholic institutions over the past seven decades, in one of the first official investigations by the country. country about abuses committed by members of the Catholic Church.
Allegations of widespread child abuse by Catholic clerics and possible cover-ups by the Church are only now surfacing in Spain, years after scandals rocked the Church in other countries such as the United States, Ireland and France.
The Navarra regional government document and the Public University of Navarra concluded that more than 31 priests and Church members, 21 of them school teachers, had allegedly abused minors in more than 17 Catholic schools and institutions in the region since 1948.
The regional director of Justice of Navarra, Eduardo Santos, said on Friday that these cases represent “the tip of the iceberg”.
“This is not a problem of the Catholic Church, but the problem within the Church and that the Christian community is living with horror and concern. This report is an attempt to discover the truth,” Santos told a news conference.
At least seven other alleged victims showed up in Navarra after the report was finalized, Santos said.
A report in the newspaper El País about the sexual abuse of children by members of the Catholic Church led to a backlash in December and sparked a debate over how such cases should be investigated.
