Neil Druckmannthe vice president of Naughty Dog and creative director of The Last of Us, said he was staying intrigued by the narrative style of Elden Ring and the other FromSoftware games, in contrast to the more direct one made of cutscenes and dialogues of the studio’s games. Furthermore, precisely from the point of view of storytelling, the studio does not want to rest on its laurels and try something newwho knows maybe inspired by the works of Miyazaki and associates.
“I’ve recently been intrigued by things like Elden Ring and Inside that don’t rely heavily on traditional narrative to tell a story,” Druckmann said in an interview with the Washington Post. “Some of the best storytelling in The Last of Us is in the cinematics, but there’s a lot also in the gameplay, in moving around an area and understanding its story just by looking at it and examining it. For me right now one of the greatest joys are games that trust their audience’s ability to figure things out. Games that don’t hold your hand, those are the things that intrigue me looking forward to.”
Will Elden Ring and the like inspire the next Naughty Dog game? Neil Druckmann does not go too far in this sense and states that the narrative methods used by the studio in the past, such as precisely dialogues and cutscenes, will also be present in the future, but also that he is very interested in trying new things.
“That doesn’t mean we won’t have dialogue or cutscenes in the future, I think those are tools in the toolbox… And I think there’s a way to carry those things forward, at least for the kind of games we make at Naughty Dog I’m really intrigued and once again we don’t want to rest on our laurels but try something a little new and different, which maybe not everyone will like, but that’s okay. And the stuff we’re working on at the moment, I can tell you that the team are very excited by the various projects we currently have at Naughty Dog”
Druckmann recently also stated that there are still stories to tell in the universe of The Last of Us, suggesting the arrival, sooner or later, of a Part 3. In the meantime, the series has exceeded 37 million copies sold in the world.
