At the time of the rescue, Aya (“Miracle” in Arabic) was still attached to her dead mother by the umbilical cord. The newborn was transported to the hospital and his condition is said to be stable.

“He arrived on Monday in a very bad condition, he had lumps, bruises and his body temperature was low and he was only breathing with difficulty,” pediatrician Hani Marouf said.

Aya lost his mother and all four of his siblings due to the earthquakes that hit Syria and Turkey.

Hospital manager Khalid Attiah said that he had received dozens of phone calls from around the world regarding Aya’s adoption.

“I won’t let anyone adopt him right now. Until her distant relatives get here, I will treat her like my own,” said Attiah, who has a four-month-old baby of her own.

At the moment, Attiah’s wife is breastfeeding both the couple’s own child and Aya.

There is a journalist who spoke to the BBC from the town of Jindayris by Mohammed al-Adnan according to destroyed up to 90 percent. A total of nearly 24,000 people have died in the earthquakes.
