The heavy rainfall brought by the storm has caused flooding and mudslides in the Malagasy capital, Antananarivo. Authorities say 39 people have died and nearly 65,000 have been left homeless.

“We are currently evacuating people from flooded areas,” John Razafimandimby of the Madagascar Disaster Agency told AFP.

To mainland Africa the storm struck on Monday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to central and northern Mozambique. Local authorities said the storm claimed three lives on Tuesday. In addition, more than 60 people were injured.

In Malawi, a storm has killed four people. In addition, the storm caused extensive power outages in the country.

The UN anticipates the storm will damage infrastructure and cause widespread flooding.

“The storm is affecting highly vulnerable populations that have already suffered from previous natural disasters and conflicts in northern Mozambique,” ​​the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.
