The Left Alliance opposes Finland’s participation in NATO’s nuclear weapons exercises.
Finland will participate in the Steadfast Noon exercises for the first time on October 14.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has confirmed Finland’s participation, but Finland’s role is not precisely known.
The Left Alliance demands a parliamentary debate on Finland’s nuclear weapons policy in NATO.
The Left Alliance in the parliamentary group’s opinion, Finland should not participate in NATO’s nuclear weapons exercises.
For the first time, Finland will participate in NATO’s annual Steadfast Noon nuclear war exercises this fall. The two-week rehearsals begin on October 14. They simulate nuclear attacks.
Prime minister Petteri Orpo (kok) has confirmed Finland’s participation in the exercises, but no other definite information about Finland’s role in these exercises is known.
“It has been up to Finland to decide how it participates in NATO’s deterrence policy based on nuclear weapons. Many NATO member countries, such as Norway, have opted out of NATO’s nuclear war exercises for reasons of principle, and Finland should have acted in the same way”, chairman of the parliamentary group Aino-Kaisa Pekonen said the group in a statement on Saturday.
Left Alliance has previously opposed nuclear weapons exercises.
Almost half of the MPs of the Left Alliance voted against when the parliament voted on Finland’s NATO membership in the spring of 2023. Chairman Lee Andersson however, he was in favor of the military union and got the majority of the party on his side.
The parliamentary group of the Left Alliance is generally concerned that there will be no parliamentary discussion of Finland’s nuclear weapons policy in NATO, and that the parliament’s access to information and decision-making power in the matter is non-existent.
“Parliament has the right to receive information about what kind of nuclear weapons policy is being created and promoted in the government. That’s why the left-wing coalition’s parliamentary group has submitted a written question on the matter,” says Pekonen.
In his opinion, the parliament should have been able to at least have some sort of weighing and discussion about what different alternative roles it is possible for Finland to take in its nuclear weapons policy as a NATO member.
