NATO | The commander of the defense forces “security great weather”: It’s good for us to be prepared

General Janne Jaakkola said on Monday that the “big weather change” in security is likely to be long-term.

Defense forces commander, general Janne Jaakkola says that the NATO military exercise held earlier this year proved that the ability to cooperate was good. Jaakkola spoke at the opening of the national national defense course at Helsinki’s Ritarihuone on Monday morning.

According to Jaakkola, there is a need to continue developing management arrangements, logistics and infrastructure.

“The preparations for placing the NATO national team on the leadership ladder and the advanced presence of the ground forces in Finland are part of this development path,” said Jaakkola in his speech.

A sub-staff of the NATO ground forces is coming to Finland, as well as some kind of model of the presence of forward ground forces.

Nordic Response exercise was arranged In the northern parts of Finland, Norway and Sweden in March. There were soldiers from 13 different countries.

Jaakkola emphasizes that, as a member of NATO, Finland sticks to its own planning and know-how.

Jaakkola also spoke about the government’s defense report being prepared. The report outlines how defense capability is maintained and developed now that Finland is a member of NATO.

“The major change in security is likely to be long-term, and it is good for us to be prepared for unforeseen developments.”

Jaakkola said that the Finnish Defense Forces sees a need for changes.

“In the current transition in the Defense Forces, we see and experience the need for refinements and changes related to operating methods and organization at all levels.”

According to Jaakkola, it is not yet possible to determine the layout for the development of the Defense Forces in the 2030s. The planning is influenced, for example, by the future grouping and operation of the Russian armed forces and observations of the ongoing war in Ukraine. NATO’s plans and the technology that will come into use in the next few years also have an impact.

“There is no reason to guess the effect of these factors yet.”
