The Atlantic Alliance calls a meeting of its leaders tomorrow to respond to the Russian attack
NATO has offered weapons and military training to the Ukrainian army, but has no troops on the ground “and no plans to send them”. This was stated by the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, at the end of the meeting of this organization. NATO has also called an emergency virtual meeting of its leaders this Friday, to study “the next steps” in the response to the Russian attack on Ukraine.
This Thursday’s meeting, at the level of ambassadors, took place after several countries activated article 4 of the Alliance treaty, which guarantees defense to allies against the risk of an attack. NATO, which in recent months has reinforced its presence in Eastern Europe, has the Rapid Response Forces ready, some battalions supported by air and naval forces.
These troops will be activated in defense of the allies and as a deterrent to prevent an escalation of the crisis, however NATO will not intervene in Ukraine, since it is not part of the Atlantic Alliance.
