Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urges residents in occupied areas to stay away from Russian bases
NATO considers it “urgent” for the UN nuclear watchdog to carry out an inspection of the Ukrainian plant in Zaporizhia, which is under Russian military control, the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said on Wednesday.
“It is urgent to authorize an inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and guarantee the withdrawal of all Russian forces” from the site, Stoltenberg told a press conference in Brussels.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday asked citizens living in the “occupied territories” by Russian troops to stay away from military installations controlled by Moscow. He did so just one day after a new attack on Kremlin military targets in the Crimean peninsula was recorded, the third in a month.
“Please do not go near the military facilities of the Russian Army and all those places where they store ammunition and equipment, where they have their headquarters,” Zelensky asked during his daily address. “Be very careful,” he demanded of Ukrainian residents in Crimea, Donbas and Kharkov.
The troops in kyiv have sharpened their aim in recent times and have carried out attacks on Russian military installations that until now seemed to be beyond their reach. This is the case of the Crimean peninsula. Three attacks in the last month have triggered alerts in Moscow, which sees how its rear has been exposed to the Himars missile launcher system, which stands for ‘High Mobility Artillery Rocket System’.
Its radius can reach up to 300 kilometers and the novelty is that they are very precise. American-made, Washington is supplying kyiv with this powerful weapon that has allowed Ukrainian troops to reach an air base on August 9 and destroy at least 17 enemy planes. The attack has not been officially claimed, but Ukrainian military sources quoted by ‘The New York Times’ attributed the attack to an elite unit.
On Tuesday, a Russian Army ammunition stockpile was also hit in Maiskoye, Crimea. Moscow attributes it to sabotage, but everything indicates a paradigm shift in war. In this context, Zelensky’s request suggests that this type of attack against the Russian rearguard will continue in the coming weeks.
Attack on Kherson
On the other hand, in Kherson, a strategic region in the south that connects with Crimea, kyiv has carried out a fierce counteroffensive in recent weeks to recover lost territory. Just yesterday the Ukrainian General Staff reported through its Telegram channel of a bombing against a Russian base. The attack resulted in the destruction of facilities and vehicles. According to kyiv, twelve Russian soldiers lost their lives in the attack.
