Mercedes Corral has been awarded the National Award for the Work of a Translator. For their part, Agata Orzeszec and Ernesto Rubio have been awarded the National Award for Best Translation for their work with ‘The Books of Jacob’, by Olga Tokarczuk. Each of the prizes is worth 30,000 euros.
The jury has selected Mercedes Corral for “an outstanding and extensive career spanning four decades and for the literary quality with which she has been able to imbue, with talent and efficiency, excellent translations from French and Italian.” Corral has translated authors such as Dino Buzzati, Natalia Ginzburg, Elio Vittorini, Italo Svevo, JMG Le Clezio, Agnes Desarthe, Romain Gary, Marquesa Colombi, Machiavelli and Georges Simenon.
The jury pointed out that Agata Orzeszek and Ernesto Rubio “have known how to weave with excellence the complex and multi-faceted text of Olga Torkarzcuk, with countless layers and a difficult but lyrical style, without losing the richness of the original, while at the same time “They convey the language of 18th century Poland without falling into anachronisms.”
