NASA launches this Wednesday (24), at 3:20 am EDT, aboard a rocket SpaceX Falcon 9, a dart mission (dual asteroid redirection test). The spacecraft will collide with an asteroid in September 2022 to perform an orbit deviation test, according to CNN International.
First “planetary defense” mission, the project wants to assess the amount of force needed to prevent a space body from crashing into Earth. The idea is exactly the same as shown by the movie “Armageddon” (1998).

The mission will hit the asteroid Didymos, 780 meters in diameter, which is 11 million kilometers from Earth. The spacecraft will crash into the moon Dimorphos, 160 meters in diameter, at a speed of 24,000 km/h.
With the impact on the small moon of the asteroid, NASA wants to study how the orbit deviation of both celestial bodies will be in a preventive measure of terrestrial cataclysms. The impacts will be observed by a satellite sent jointly by the Italian Space Agency in its first space project.
According to NASA, the impact should reduce the asteroid’s orbit by 1%, but the agency wants to study the impact angle, the appearance of the asteroid’s surface, its mass and composition, factors that can influence the deviation from the course.
According to the European Space Agency, this is the first time that humans change the dynamics of a body in the solar system with the possibility of analyzing its consequences.
NASA broadcasts the release live on its YouTube channel.
