A foreign student on a bike hit and killed by a waste truck in Naples.
The incident happened around 2.15am, before dawn. Agents of the Chiaia Operational Unit of the municipal police intervened in Piazza Cavour, near the Casanova Institute, where a truck from Asia, the Municipality's in-house company, employed in the collection of solid urban waste, had hit LH, 27 years old, who was using a rented pedal-assisted bicycle.
The girl, in Italy for study reasons, was urgently transported to the emergency room of the Pellegrini hospital in critical condition, and died at 10.35 this morning, after being transferred to the Ospedale del Mare. Immediately after the accident, the vehicles involved were impounded and the driver of the lorry was subjected to urgent tests to check for any use of alcohol or drugs. The young woman's body was made available to the judicial authorities and transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine. Furthermore, the German embassy was promptly informed to notify her family of her death. At the moment, the exact dynamics of the accident are still under investigation. Initial investigations show that the cyclist may have made a sudden change of direction just as the lorry was approaching, making it impossible for the driver to avoid the impact. The local police officers immediately noted the seriousness of the situation, also highlighted by the presence of obvious traces of blood at the accident site.
«We are deeply saddened and are close to the victim's family, to whom we assure our full support in a moment of such great despair. We hope that the dynamics of the accident will be clarified as soon as possible and responsibility for what happened will be ascertained”, reads a note from the municipal administration of Naples.
