American scientists from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) have named the blood type, the owners of which are most predisposed to a severe course of COVID-19. Work results published at PLOS Genetics.
Experts analyzed more than 3,000 blood proteins to identify those that increase the likelihood of hospitalization and death from coronavirus infection. As a result, doctors identified six proteins that lead to a severe course of the disease, as well as eight that form increased protection. It turned out that the second blood type (A) causes the greatest risks of complications and the need for respiratory support, which is confirmed by previous studies.

According to experts, this discovery has shaped the goals of future developments in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. However, they emphasized that further study of this phenomenon is necessary for final conclusions.
In February 2022, doctors from the University of Toronto in Canada for the first time learned how to change the blood type of patients with organ transplants. This was done thanks to the purification of blood from specific antigens with the help of special enzymes.
