French scientists from the Pasteur Institute and the National Institute of Health and Medical Research have named the key role of the intestine in the body’s immune defense against external pathogens. Work results described in the journal Science.
Physicians built a model of intestinal infection with Escherichia coli, in which they were able to see that innate effector cells act in the early stages of infection. During the study, the scientists found that ILC3 cells, which play an important role in the immune response, persist for several months in an activated state after exposure to pathogens. In addition, during secondary infection, ILC3 “remember” the mechanism of action to protect the intestinal mucosa.
