The Naftogaz Ukrainy company filed a complaint with the European Commission (EC), stating that the Russian company Gazprom was booking insufficient capacities for the transit of blue fuel through the country’s gas transportation system (GTS). About this on Wednesday, December 22, reported press service of the Ukrainian company.
To confirm its arguments, the Ukrainian side referred to the fact that Gazprom possesses sufficient volumes of gas for transit. At the same time, Naftogaz believes that the Russian company is aimed at “creating an artificial gas shortage”.
In addition, “Gazprom” is allegedly going to “put pressure” on the European Union (EU), the press service quotes the words of the head of the board of “Naftogaz” Yuri Vitrenko. According to him, Russia is thus seeking the earliest possible launch of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline without complying with the requirements of European legislation.
Gazprom’s actions led to significant negative consequences for all European fuel consumers, Vitrenko specified. In particular, as a result of these actions, Naftogaz suffered as one of the largest buyers of gas in the region.
“Therefore, we ask the European Commission to properly respond to violations,” Vitrenko summed up.
At the same time, the head of Naftogaz of Ukraine warned on December 17 that the gas tariffs set by the company could rise due to the rise in fuel prices in Europe. Currently, the Ukrainian government is working to ensure that citizens do not overpay seven times. Gas prices in the EU have increased sevenfold over the year, he said.
At the same time, gas reserves in Ukrainian underground storage facilities (UGS) dropped below the level of the beginning of its injection in 2021, according to the data of the “Operator of the GTS of Ukraine” as of December 14. At the same time, the total level of reserves in storage facilities dropped to 15.258 billion cubic meters. m.
On the eve it became known that the Russian gas holding did not begin to book the Yamal-Europe capacities, in connection with which the transit of gas to Germany via the gas pipeline was suspended. Then the reverse began.
On the same day, Stanislav Mitrakhovich, an expert with the National Energy Security Fund and the Financial University under the Russian government, explained that Gazprom did not pump gas through Yamal-Europe due to the lack of applications from buyers. Buyers without long-term contacts must purchase gas at a price close to the price on the exchange, but now it is so high that no one wants to buy at it.
