Spanish “Matador” Rafael Nadal will not participate in the US Open, the last of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, according to what he announced.
Nadal, 38, explained his decision by saying that he did not feel able to perform at his best after participating in the singles and doubles competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“I don’t think I’ll be able to give 100% this time,” the 22-time Grand Slam champion wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Nadal, who has won the title four times, added that the next event he will participate in will be the Laver Cup next September in the German capital, Berlin.
This will be his sixth absence from the last seven Grand Slam tournaments, with the exception of his participation in Roland Garros this year, where he was eliminated in the first round.
“Hello everyone, I am writing to inform you that I have decided not to participate this year in the US Open, where I have wonderful memories,” Nadal continued in his post.
“I will miss those exciting and special nights in New York at Arthur Ashe Stadium,” he added.
“A special thank you to all my fans in the United States. I will miss you all and I will see you again later. Good luck to everyone in the always wonderful US Championship,” he added.
Nadal, who won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics and has suffered from many injuries in the recent period, was eliminated in the second round by Serbian Novak Djokovic at the Paris Olympics, and then with his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals of the doubles.
