When it was announced that games of the Nintendo 64 hitting the Switch at some point this month, many were concerned to see that, at the reveal presentation for Europe, these titles were running at 50Hz, something that happened with the original console. Fortunately, the Big N has mentioned that this will not be the case.
Through a statement shared on the official Nintendo UK account, it has been revealed that all N64 games coming to Switch Online will be playable at 60Hz in English. Similarly, certain titles may change to the PAL version, which will offer other language options. This was what was commented on the matter:
“All Nintendo 64 games included with the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack can be played in 60Hz English versions. Some games will also have the option to play the original European PAL version with language options. “

Although in America and Japan the N64 games looked similar on NTSC compatible displays, in Europe the PAL system was used, which caused the games to run at 50Hz. Although this changed with the introduction of HDMI, fans were worried about reliving this nightmare once again.

Editor’s Note:
The Nintendo Switch Online is a great service for playing retro. Although there are clearly high-level omissions, like Final Fantasy, the Big N offering is on this platform. Considering that the N64 has a large library of Nintendo and Rare, it is good to see that European gamers finally have the opportunity to enjoy these titles properly.
