The largest black diamond in the world has sold for more than 3.7 million euros at a Sotheby’s auction. The auction house had taken into account a bid of more than 6 million euros for the so-called Enigma.
Since 2004, the stone has been considered the largest natural black diamond ever found. And as of 2006, the Guinness Book of Records lists the Enigma as the largest polished diamond in the world.
The Enigma weighs 555.55 carats. The diamond exceeds the weight of both the famous Great Star of Africa (530.2 carats) in the British royal scepter and the Golden Jubilee (545.67 carats) in the Thai scepter.
Out of space
The black gem, also known as a carbonado diamond, may have come from outer space, according to experts. Carbonados of this structure have so far only been found in Brazil and the Central African Republic. Scientists have long argued about their origins.
“They are shrouded in mystery as to their origin or formation because not many of them have been found on Earth,” geologist Aaron Celestian, curator of mineral sciences at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles told Reuters in late January. .
