Neve Campbell | Actress
Interview
He returns to the horror saga ‘Scream’ playing the iconic role with which he triumphed at the age of 22
If in the 90s there was an actress who marked an entire generation with her dark hair and kind eyes, that was Neve Campbell. In just two years, from 1996 to 1998, he starred in cult films such as ‘Youth and Witches’, the series ‘Five in the Family’ and the horror saga ‘Scream’.
Born in Canada 48 years ago, Neve was chosen for the role of Sidney Prescott – a high school student trying to survive the wrath of a murderer – when she was 22 years old and did not venture that she would continue playing the character 25 years later, with the same role. in four sequels. The saga extended between 1996 and 2011, and raised 608 million.
Wes Craven, one of the greats of the horror genre, and Kevin Williams created the story of a group of teenagers harassed by a masked killer who killed them one by one in the most violent ways he could think of. The fifth film – the first since Craven’s death in 2015 – opens today in Spain, continuing a franchise that has featured some of the most iconic American actors of the past decade.
Among them Courtney Cox, Drew Barrymore and Campbell herself. Burned out with the industry that only offered her characters in horror films, she left Hollywood and moved to London leaving her past in Los Angeles behind. There the actress has rebuilt her life with the father of her two children.
-He swore never to shoot a horror movie again. Surprise to see her again in the ‘Scream’ franchise.
-Kevin Williamson’s script changed everything. ‘Scream’ was a mega success and I didn’t want to shoot a horror movie again because I did the best one. I didn’t want to downgrade. Also, I didn’t make much money from this genre and I’m an actress. I need to work. Don’t stay stuck inside a piece of paper. My entire professional career is marked by the character of Sidney.
-He returns to his iconic role, but he does it without Wes Craven. Did you hesitate before embarking on such a personal project for the creator of a saga that has had different directors?
-Yes. That worried me a lot because this franchise was part of Wes. However, I received a very emotional personal invitation from the directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, and I decided to accept their offer. Both are filmmakers with a very particular style, very interesting. When they called me, they told me that they were directors thanks to Wes and that convinced me.
-He did not want to participate in the third installment because he did not understand continuing with the same character. What is your relationship with Sidney at the moment?
-Everyone who loves Sidney Prescott has either tried to kill her or been killed. My character should have been in an insane asylum after the first movie. At the time, I was worried that ‘Scream 3’ was too similar to the first two films. Now I am much more in tune with my character
– Have you already made peace with fame?
-When fame overwhelms you at 20, it is very difficult to understand your life. I was very lucky because I had stability in my family and they supported me when I needed it. It is very easy to lose your mind in the bubble of success, in fact, I have seen many actors fall from the top to the hole of addictions.
–
Now that you are a mother, do you feel closer to your character?
-Maybe yes because Sidney is also a mother and that adds maturity. We are both stronger and we can handle more complicated situations. As a mother, I want to be present in my children’s lives, especially in their early years, because those years are very important.
-Since he left Los Angeles he has never returned…
-I don’t look back. I like living in London, where there is a multicultural energy that I am passionate about. Los Angeles doesn’t inspire me, it doesn’t seem like a welcoming city. Everyone belongs to the film industry, you live in your car and you are permanently isolated. I got tired of Los Angeles and got a little tired of the game of pretending to be who I’m not. Here in England I enjoy an anonymous existence. I’ve stayed out of the Hollywood scene and I feel great
-The salary disparity between actors and actresses is a recurring theme in Hollywood. Is it something you have experienced?
-Of course. I know that I have not been paid in the same way as my colleagues on many projects. I’m not going to go into details, but in the TV series I started on, the actors earned more than the actresses.
-Hollywood has changed a lot in the last two decades. Do you still feel the same passion for acting?
-I have never lost my love for acting, for dance. As a child I used to watch Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire movies; I grew up loving that cinema. I’m still in love with musicals and I hope, now that they’re back in fashion, to be able to participate in one.
